iTunes, iCloud, alternative software and third-party cloud services.

Test versions of iOS, jailbreak experiments, a constant transition from device to device, crash tests, as well as tons of software from the App Store and bypassing it - these are not all the reasons. why have I ever lost important personal data with the iPhone.

But similar difficulties are encountered not only by scorched geeks who always have no peace. Despite the incredible reliability of Apple technology, for important information that you don’t want to lose, you still need to prepare copies in a safe place.

To protect you from possible annoying misunderstandings, I brought together all personally verified backup options.

1. iTunes and backup to your Mac or PC hard drive

Benefits: With backup via iTunes, you can access information without the Internet - at least in a blank field. Moreover, this is one of the fastest options to save almost all data from the iPhone.

disadvantages: sorry, but to backup or restore data without a computer will not work with all desire. Backing up information from a large iPad Pro to your MacBook 12 ’’ looks especially funny. Plus - the copy takes up a lot of disk space, which is very noticeable on a Mac with small SSDs.

What can be saved: almost everything except content from the App Store and iTunes Store (it will be downloaded via the Internet), iTunes-synced content (imported audio, etc.) stored in cloud photos (for example, iCloud photo stream), Touch ID and Apple Pay settings. Please note that some data requires backup protection with a password.

How to do it: everything is simple - just go to iTunes, go to the device tab and press a single button to create a copy or restore it.

My opinion: I use the backup to the hard drive of my MacBook Pro only before some kind of stressful moment - installing a test version of iOS, jailbreak and so on. In other situations, I prefer other types of preservation of personal information.

2. iTunes alternatives for backups using iMazing as an example

Benefits: with their help, you can not only access data without the Internet, but also feel like a real geek who uses not only standard software. In addition, alternatives may be more convenient in specific cases - for example, to quickly save photos to your hard drive.

disadvantages: For all backup processes, you still need a computer, access to which is far from always available.

What can be saved: Almost the same amount of data that iTunes saves (but different applications may have their own nuances).

How to do it: In most cases, a backup in iTunes alternatives is created or restored by pressing one or two buttons (for example, in the same iMazing). But each specific option may have its own nuances - in some solutions, you can separately save messages, contacts or other data.

My opinion: In some cases, the use of alternatives for iTunes may be more than appropriate - especially on PCs, for which Apple’s program is simply not tailored. It works extremely awkwardly even on fairly powerful computers. But on the Mac myself, I still today tend toward a standard solution.

3. iCloud as iPhone cloud backup storage

Benefits: In this case, the computer will not be needed. And that's great.

disadvantages: Potential payment for a large amount of storage for those for whom free 5 GB will be too small. Plus - without the Internet, all this is useless.

What can be saved: almost everything except data previously saved in iCloud, data from other cloud services (for example, Gmail), Apple Pay settings, Touch ID settings, content from the App Store and iTunes Store.

How to do it: you need to go to the backup menu from the iCloud section in the system settings of the device (Settings - iCloud - Backup) - all the necessary functions are available here.

My opinion: Despite the fact that today I only use devices from Apple (MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad), many interesting services have been “living” with me since the time of my first Android smartphone (HTC Wildfire, if memory serves). So my main cloud is Google Drive, not iCloud. And in the latter, I rarely have enough free space for backups.

4. iCloud and Apple branded services for saving data from iPhone

Benefits: Data is synchronized in real time. And during recovery, you can safely use the device. This is especially convenient when, for example, you are testing a new iPhone from partners. You enter your Apple ID data, and personal information is slowly being pulled over the Internet, without distracting from using the device.

disadvantages: not all information can be saved here - this is not a backup copy. The main thing - you need to spend a couple of minutes to set up a new device. And to restore you need access to the Internet.

What can be saved: photos, mail, contacts, calendars, reminders, Safari bookmarks, notes, Wallet data, a music collection in Apple Music, and so on. The vast majority of modern mobile applications can work with iCloud Drive, and it can be very convenient.

How to do it: a set of data synchronized in iCloud is available from its section in the system settings of the device (Settings - iCloud). Since many third-party applications can store information in iCloud Drive, you need to delve into their settings. Other Apple branded services (such as Apple Music) provide access to information after entering the Apple ID.

My opinion: Despite the fact that iCloud Drive is far from the main repository of my personal information, its free volume is constantly occupied by the data of some applications (there are just a lot of text files from Byword here). And it is very convenient. And about the coolness of modern branded Apple services, I generally keep quiet - what is only Apple Music. And he successfully stores all my data in himself without any outside help.

Why backup your iPhone

So what exactly is a backup and why is it needed? Speaking in the simplest language, a backup is all the data from your iPhone stored on a computer or in cloud storage in an encrypted form. A backup copy is needed in order to restore any previously existing data on the iPhone if necessary. Recovery may be necessary in a variety of cases, but most often with:

  • Lost or damaged iPhone. Having a pre-created backup of the device, you can restore all data to another iPhone.
  • Having problems with iOS. Updating your iPhone doesn't always go smoothly. In rare, but, alas, cases to be, after updating the iPhone simply does not turn on, requiring recovery. Having prematurely created a backup copy, during the recovery process you will be able to return not only the operability of the iPhone, but also all its data.

  • Buying a new iPhone. Thanks to the backup, you can very quickly apply all the settings of the old iPhone to the new one, as well as move all applications, photos and other content to it.

Obviously, if you value the data of your iPhone, even if it’s not gigabytes of unique photos, but “only” a contact book, you must make a backup copy of the device. You can create it in three main ways, which we described below. However, before moving on to them, we will clarify what exactly is stored in the backup.

What is backed up

Both iTunes and iCloud create backups with the following contents:

  • Device settings.
  • Data on installed applications and their settings.
  • History of text messages, including iMessage. Important! For the successful recovery of iMessage, SMS and MMS messages, you need a SIM card, which should be used when creating a backup.
  • The appearance of the main screen and the arrangement of applications.
  • Health app data.
  • Media Library (photo and video).
  • Purchase history from the App Store, iTunes Store, and iBooks Store.
  • HomeKit device settings.
  • Ringtones

You most likely noticed that the application doesn’t get into the copy, but only information about them and their settings. Apple should be grateful for such an approach, because, otherwise, backups would grow to indecent sizes. Now to the ways.

How to backup iPhone in iCloud

The first way is using the iCloud cloud service. It involves backing up data from an iPhone or iPad without using wires. In this case, all information is stored on Apple's servers in a highly encrypted form, so you should not worry about data safety.

Creating a backup of your iPhone or iPad in iCloud is not the right solution for everyone. The fact is that only 5 GB is available in iCloud for free. If the size of the data stored in the backup exceeds this amount, then iOS will warn you that creating a copy is not possible.

Note that to create a backup of your iPhone or iPad in iCloud requires an active Wi-Fi connection.

Step 1. On iPhone or iPad, go to the “Settings» → iCloud → «Backup copy". On devices running iOS 10.3 or newer, the iCloud section can be found by going to the account management page, which is located at the very top of the list of parameters (above “Airplane mode»).

Step 2. Activate the “ICloud Backup". Enabling the function will result in a message that the backup copy of the mobile device will no longer be created on the computer. Click “OK».

Step 3. Wait for the backup function to turn on.

Step 4. Connect your iPhone or iPad to a power source, to Wi-Fi and lock it. Backup starts automatically.

In such a simple way, the function of creating an iPhone or iPad backup in iCloud is turned on. It is important to note that the process of creating a copy of iOS begins only if the gadget is charging, has Wi-Fi connection and is blocked. However, it is not necessary to fulfill all the requirements for creating a copy in iCloud, you can force the system to backup.

How to manually backup iPhone or iPad to iCloud

Step 1. On iPhone or iPad, go to the “Settings» → iCloud → «Backup copy».

Step 2. Click “Back up" at the bottom of the page. Creating a copy will begin immediately.

It is worth noting one point here. No notification will be made of a successful backup of your iOS device. You can verify the success of the operation yourself by going to the menu "Settings» → iCloud → «Backup copy". It will also display information about how much time is left before the creation of the copy is completed, if it is still being created.

How to backup iPhone in iTunes

The size of an iPhone or iPad backup in iTunes is limited only by the size of the computer’s drive. If your mobile device has a lot of data, for example, whole collections of photos and videos are collected, then, of course, you should create a backup copy of it through iTunes.

Step 1. Connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer using the USB cable and launch iTunes. If iTunes is not installed on your computer, then you can download the current version on Apple official website.

Step 2. Select a device in the iTunes window.

Step 3. On the “Overview"(Opens by default) check the box"This computer».

Step 4. Click “Create a copy now»To start backing up your iPhone or iPad. Before this you can activate the option "Encrypt local copy"To set a password for the backup. The main thing after this is not to forget the specified password, because in this case, recovery from the copy will be impossible. Step 5. Wait until the backup is complete. The mobile device cannot be disconnected from the computer during the procedure. Please note that creating a copy can take a lot of time, especially if you have a lot of content stored on your device.

As you can see, creating a backup in iTunes is also not difficult. In addition to iTunes, various third-party applications can help with creating a backup.

How to backup your iPhone with a third-party application

This feature is offered by most modern file managers for Apple mobile devices, but, unfortunately, almost all of them are paid. There are two free and tested options: iTools and iMazing.

We must say right away that, in general, these programs are not ideal. The latest versions of iTools, although Russified, but during installation they show a Chinese-language message box unpleasant for seeing. There is nothing dangerous about this, but it scares users away. iMazing, in turn, reveals all its functionality only when purchasing the full version. However, the iPhone and iPad backup function that interests us is also available in the free version of iMazing.

Why even make iPhone backups in third-party applications? There is really no sharp need for their creation. However, many users want to provide important files, such as memorable photos and videos, with extra security. And for these purposes, alternative methods of creating backups also help.

The backup process in any of these tools is the same. Consider the operation using the completely free iTools utility as an example.

Step 1. Download iTools from official website of the program and unzip the archive with the utility.

Step 2. Launch iTools and connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer. ITunes must be installed on the computer, otherwise iTools will not be able to identify the device.

Step 3. After the iPhone or iPad appears in iTools, go to the “Instruments". Step 4. Click “Backup».

Step 5. In the window that opens, select the checkboxes for the types of content that you want to back up and click "Further».

Step 6. Wait for the identification of the content and click "Run". Previously, you can select the folder where the backup will be saved by clicking “Edit».

At the end of the backup process, you can check the result. You will notice that unlike iCloud and iTunes, iTools does not encrypt files in a special way. This makes it possible to access the same photos from your iPhone or iPad without the use of additional utilities.

How to recover data from backup on iPhone

We figured out the creation of backups, now we will analyze the equally important process of restoring the iPhone and iPad from them. Recovery of iOS devices from iCloud and iTunes is possible during their initial setup, or after a complete reset. In this case, the user is only required to follow the steps in the start guide of the system. The choice of recovery type (or settings, if the device is new) must be made on the screen "IPhone setup».

It is quite obvious that if you previously backed up in iCloud, then select "Recover from iCloud Copy". All the same with the copy in iTunes, for recovery from which you have to choose "Recover from iTunes copy", Then connect the gadget to the computer and launch iTunes.

Backups can take up a lot of space, both in iCloud and on a computer. Of course, backups that have become unnecessary must be deleted, freeing up precious space. Fortunately, this is done very simply, that in iCloud, that in iTunes.

How to delete iCloud backup

Step 1. Go to the menu “Settings» → iCloud.

Step 2. Select “Storage» → «Control».

Step 3. In the “Backups»Select the copy of the device you want to delete.

Step 4. Wait for the backup to be identified and click “Delete copy».

Step 5. Confirm the deletion.

How to delete iTunes backup

Step 1. Launch iTunes.

Step 2. Go to the menu “Edit» → «Settings».

Step 3. Select the settings section “Devices».

Step 4. Select the backup you want to delete and click the "Delete backup».
Step 5. Confirm the deletion.

Note that on Mac, the process of deleting backups is almost the same, with one exception. You need to select the menu in the program parameters iTunes → «Settings».

How to save your data on iPhone, iPad, iPod before updating?

Everything is very simple:

1. Launch the iTunes program. If not, you can download it here.

2. Connect the iPhone / iPad / iPod to the USB cable that is inserted into your computer.

3. Your device will appear on the screen in iTunes, click on it with the left mouse button, let's give your device a unique name. If we need to restore from a backup copy, then among the backups it will be easier for us to find our device by the unique name and backup time. So, left-clicked the mouse, it became possible to edit the device name, enter a unique name and press the "ENTER" key

4. After your device has received a unique name, right-click on the name, a menu appears:

4. Select the menu item - "Create backup"

When finished, iTunes will let you know.

5. Third-party cloud services for storing information on the example of Google

Benefits: The ultimate in versatility and access from any device. For example, branded Google services are perfect for users who complement the work with the iPhone Android smartphone.

disadvantages: iOS limitations (after all, Apple prefers branded services), the ability to save far from all the data, as well as the need for Internet access.

What can be saved: mail, contacts, calendars, notes, as well as photos in Google Photos, music in Google Music, files in Google Drive, and so on. And the same story with other similar services - for example, files of any type can be safely stored in Dropbox, and they will not go anywhere even in the most emergency cases.

How to do it: setting synchronization of mail, contacts, calendars and Google notes is available from the corresponding section of the device’s system settings (Settings - Mail, addresses, calendars), and the loading of other data is configured from each individual third-party application.

My opinion: if you use several devices from different manufacturers (maybe you have a PC instead of a Mac or Android instead of an iPhone), it will definitely be convenient for you to store the basic data in Gmail - mail, calendars and contacts. In other cases, it is better to put all your information in the hands of Apple - it’s more convenient.

All at once to minimize the risk of losing important records

I myself am so strong immersed in cloud servicesThat the entire device backups do only as a last resort. And all I lose is just the settings on my iPhone. Although the risks still remain.

And for maximum confidence in the safety of personal data, you can use all the described methods together - regularly make backups in iTunes and iCloud, as well as duplicate all the most important information in the cloud services (you can even several). This is the best option, because the rule "do not store eggs in one basket" has not yet been canceled.
